Hot take that will upset at least three generations before lunch: There are no real generational differences at work.
Yes, I said it. No, HR did not revoke my badge (yet). Decades of Hogan Assessments data show the same thing over and over again: Across ages, countries, and job titles, people want remarkably similar things from leaders: Clear direction, fair decisions Respect, someone who listens Someone who doesn’t emotionally implode before Monday.
In other words: humans gonna human.
And yet… something does feel different today. Here’s my theory: It’s not that “younger generations” want different things. It’s that they feel more entitled to say them out loud. Older generations often thought: “This doesn’t make sense, but I’ll keep my head down.” Younger generations think: “This doesn’t make sense, and I’ll book a meeting about it.” Same needs, different volume. And when we actually ask people what they want from leaders (instead of guessing based on birth year), the answers are boringly consistent: Drive and direction (Ambition) Strategic thinking (Inquisitive) Diplomatic, respectful communication (Interpersonal Sensitivity) Data-based decisions, not vibes (Science) Leaders who are a resource, not a privilege
So maybe the real shift isn’t generational at all. Maybe it’s cultural. People haven’t changed. Silence has. And honestly? That’s probably progress.
